productivity of different crops. The state has a strong
tradition in research and development and a large pool of well
qualified agriculture scientists available for deployment.
The activities of Research & Development revolve around the

Activities of these Farms:
Production of quality seeds and planting materials for
distribution to the small and marginal farmers.
Collection and maintenance of germ plasms of different fruits,
flowers and medicinal plants.
Conducting adaptive trials on farmer oriented problems.
Demonstration on improved technology of cultivation for
motivating farmers.
Some of
the Current Initiatives taken by the State Govt. in the field of
Research and Development:
A hybrid
vegetable seed production centre has been set up at State
Horticultural Research and Development Station, Krishnanagar, in
the Nadia district for production of hybrid seeds.
One
Tissue Culture Laboratory has recently been set up at
Krishnanagar Horticulture Farm by the Department of Food
Processing and Horticulture for production of micro-propagated
plants starting with banana. The Dept. of Science & Technology
too has set up a similar laboratory. In addition, a number of
private tissue culture laboratories are in operation in the
State.
A Citrus
Dieback Research Station has been set up at Kalimpong to promote
production of mandarin oranges in the Darjeeling Hills, as
mandarin orange is one of the major economic crops of the
hills. This station has taken up programmes to rejuvenate the
degenerating orchards by undertaking various technologies like
rejuvenation of foot/root rotted plants, application of low
cost, and environment friendly method to control fruit flies,
usage of proper nuclear seedlings and disease-free planting
materials.
A
project for establishment of Quality Control Laboratory for
medicinal plants has been sanctioned, which would be implemented
by Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (BCKV).
56 acres
of land at Malda will be handed over to ICAR very soon, to
establish a Regional Research Institute on Sub-tropical
Horticulture, mainly to conduct R&D in mangoes and lychees.
Dialogue
with CPRI, Simla for introducing new varieties of potatoes is
going on.
Very
recently the Department participated, on invitation, at the
National Working Group Meeting on Mechanization of Horticulture
at the Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (C.I.A.E),
Bhopal. A status paper has been submitted highlighting the areas
where mechanization in Horticulture is very essential. Thus
C.I.A.E is also now associated with the overall development of
mechanization in Horticulture of the state.
Human
Resource Development and Awareness programmes
The
Department of Food Processing and Horticulture, Govt. of West
Bengal provides all sorts of information on Food processing and
Horticulture scenario of the state to the interested investors
and also imparts training programmes to the investors and
farmers.

the Departments activities:
Conferences held to attract investors in the Food Processing
sector:
To woo
investors to the Food Processing sector in the state, the
Department has undertaken a number of promotional measures like:
Holding Investors Conference.
Organizing
Shows. A National Mango Show was organised at the Agri-Horti
Society of India and a State level Mango Show was held at Malda.
An
International Conference was held exclusively for potatoes where
representatives from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh participated.
Training
Programmes:
The
Department imparts training programmes to farmers on different
crops and Agri Export Zones. In addition to these, the
Department has also conducted training programmes at Jadavpur
University and also through several NGOs like R.K.Mission,
Narendrapur, Dr. Subhas Mukherjee Memorial R.B. Research Centre
and Elmherst Institute, Bolepur. Officers of the Department
impart training as guest lecturers in various EDP courses
organized at the district level. Bengal National Chamber of
Commerce organizes EDP with active participation from this
Department.
In order
to popularize low cost preservation of vegetables in rural
areas/growing areas, the Department has provided grant to
Ramkrishna Mission Lokshiksha Parishad, Narendrapur for setting
up units in rural areas for popularization of low cost
preservation of vegetables.
Small
and medium entrepreneurs training programme on food processing
industry:
The aim is
to train small and medium entrepreneurs on food processing in
order to enable and encourage them to set up processing
industries in the state.
The
training programmes generally cover the following subjects:

Different Processes like unit operation, fermentation,
dehydration, canning, bottling etc.
Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bio-Chemical Engineering etc.
