Food Parks are comprehensive industrial estates for
food-processing units where the industries would have the
provision of common facilities like cold storage, cold chain,
effluent treatment plant, ware housing, power connection, water
facilities, sewerage etc. The creation of these common
infrastructures would benefit the individual units particularly
the small and medium scale units, because these are expensive to
be set up by any single individual unit. Therefore a common park
with all the infrastructures would help in the growth of this
industry.
The main objective of setting up the Food Park is to attract
several units in the Food Processing industry into a common area
under the industry cluster concept so as to ensure low operating
cost, more flexibility of operations of the units in the park
and reduce post-harvest losses. This would also help to
establish better linkages between farmers and processors, which
would finally result in better realization to the farmers as
well as lower cost to the consumers.
The Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture is
encouraging and facilitating private sector, joint venture, and
PSU initiatives for establishing Food Parks at different places
of the state in order to provide common facilities to the
entrepreneurs for setting up food processing units.
