West
Bengal has competitive advantage in
floriculture
but the same
has remained unexploited, mainly because of inadequate cold
chain infrastructure for transportation. It has been observed
that although domestic entrepreneurs (mainly in North Bengal)
have been able to produce acceptable quality products, they have
lacked the required infrastructure and a clear understanding or
access to the markets to export them at reasonable prices.
Hence, the
state government has realized that the only way to establish
this industry in West Bengal is to promote floriculture through
the common infrastructure built on shared cost basis. It is
being proposed that the necessary infrastructure be developed so
that more and more talented entrepreneurs are encouraged to take
up floriculture.
Floriculture Park at Mungpoo, North Bengal:
With the
objective to boost up floriculture industry in the state, the
state government is setting up a Floriculture Infrastructure
Complex at Mungpoo in North Bengal This infrastructure complex
is believed to increase export of cut flowers from the state and
help in the commercialization of floriculture.
The
Complex would comprise of facilities like:
Collection Centre (one or more), with:
Cold
Storage
Grading/Packaging Room
Tissue
Culture Lab
Enough
refrigerated vans to collect flowers and transport it
Infrastructure Facilities at airport like:
Facilities for custom check, cold storage and phytosanitary
checks
Chartered flight, if possible, to destination countries
60 acres
of cultivable land would also be provided to owners of the
complex, on which he may have his own floriculture unit.

Feasibility Study for this project has been carried out by ICICI-Winfra in conjunction with technical experts
from UNDP (Dutch) and Israel. Israeli floriculture
consultants have inspected the identified land and suggested
the flowers, which may be grown there.
The
State Government now is on the look out for a suitable joint
venture partner (with majority stake), who can implement
this project.
The prospective co-promoter should have
Expertise in floriculture
Understanding of market requirements
Necessary contacts in the market
Sound financial condition
It
is expected that this project will go a long way in the
development of floriculture, as a flourishing industry, in
the state.
